Basing on intelligence information from the regional
Office on combating economic crimes, the Investigation division of the Rivno
regional Police Department on August 3, 2015, initiated criminal proceedings
under Art. 198, Pt. 1 (Purchase or sale of property, obtained by crime) of the
Criminal Code of Ukraine. As part of this proceedings investigative (search)
activities were carried out by the local law enforcers.
These activities resulted in detecting the car of a
local resident, which was used to transport illegally mined raw amber. On the
same day by order of the investigating judge policemen from the Office on
combating economic crimes searched this vehicle. As a result of the search was
found raw amber weighting more than 2500 kg, packed in white bags. The estimated minimum cost of the seized
amber is more than three million US dollars. The expert examination of seized amber
"More precisely the weight, composition (the size
of amber pieces) and cost of this consignment of amber, already prepared for
smuggling, will be determined by experts in Kiev where it is going now under
armed guard" – Arsen Avakov reported.
He stressed that today's seizure of amber is the
result of a great work of the MIA and the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine to
expose and to suppress activity of the largest criminal group operating in the
Rivno region and profiting on illegal mining of amber. Later in the course of
the investigation will be announced the names of the people directly involved
in this illicit business. Among them –
former MPs, officials and law enforcement officers.
"The withdrawn amber will be inventoried and
presented publicly in the coming hours in Kiev, so that nothing will
"happen" to it. It will be
converted into the coffers of the state "- said Arsen Avakov.
The head of MIA also reminded that he had said earlier
about the need to pass a law that would define the state control over the
production and marketing of amber.
